The Department of Obstetrics and Pathology of Small Animals named after A.P. Studentsov
The Department of Obstetrics named after A. P. Studentsov is one of the oldest departments not only in the Kazan Academy of Veterinary Medicine, but also in the Russian Federation. As an independent unit, it has existed since 1922. The first head was Professor, Doctor of Veterinary Science Sergey Petrovich Mamadyshsky - a student of Professor Leonid Stepanovich Sapozhnikov who was the founder of the Kazan School of Veterinary Surgeons. From 1930 to 1967 the Department was headed by the first Doctor of Veterinary Sciences specialized in the veterinary obstetrics, the founder of the Kazan School of Veterinary Obstetrics, Andrei Petrovich Studentsov, the corresponding member of Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Honored Scientist of Tatarstan and the RSFSR, and whose textbooks are still in use.
The department staff does multifaceted research in many priority areas of veterinary obstetrics, both in research and in training activities. The research work of the department includes the following areas: the struggle with infertility of livestock nutritional character, the metabolic disturbances, the development of effective treatments and prevention of obstetric and gynecological pathology with cows, development of methods of group therapy and prevention of breast cancer pathology, and treatment prevention of diseases of reproductive system of pigs. The development of new drugs used in the reproductive system pathologies and mammary gland of female farm animals, which received 14 patents.
The work with full-time and part-time students of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology and the Standardization is held at the modern scientific and theoretical and practical levels. To prepare highly qualified specialists there are all necessary conditions at the department: the clinic, classrooms, the research laboratory, the scientific advisory center and the center for training engineers in artificial insemination of female farm animals, equipment and tools, medical products and one of the best collections of museum exhibits in the Russian Federation.
According to the results of scientific research the methods of general anesthesia for dogs, cats and rabbits not causing irreversible changes in the functioning of vital organs have been established.
